I remember the Berenstain Bears from my own childhood as well as from reading the books to other children when I would babysit or care for them as an afterschool or weekend job when I was a teen. The books have always contained a positive and encouraging message for kids in a story they can relate to. This particular story introduces children to the concept of the rewards gained from doing a job well and everyone working together on small parts of a larger job so no one feels overwhelmed by more than they can handle. Brother, Sister and even their younger sister (Honey) are given responsibilities to help with the Spring Cleaning of the house and yard. When the kids decide to “take a break” instead of continuing with their tasks and dealing with the spiders in their playhouse, Papa Bear encourages them and helps get rid of the spiders so they can finish up the playhouse and have a nice clean place to play in and enjoy with their friends. Granted this is from an adult viewpoint but from experience with the Berenstain Books and children I know the characters are familiar to young children and the language and pictures provide entertaining and instructional material for youngsters in a wholesome story at their level.
