BIBLIOPHILE MUSINGS:
I love reading historical fiction. It was refreshing to see someone take the founding fathers and focus on a woman behind them. In doing so it also brought out other women behind the men who were instrumental in the birth of our nation. As the authors coined it founding mothers.
Eliza Schuyler Hamilton has her own story that although it intertwines with Alexander Hamilton’s for a time it started and ended apart from him. We see her recognize her own path apart from her sisters and family expectations before she meets him. Then although she becomes engrossed in his goals and supporting him as a wife, she has many years as a widow to again find a path as herself while respecting his memory.
These authors did a remarkable job of bringing characters to life with minimal documents to research. I really appreciate that they used alternative resources such as ‘field trips’ and personal belongings to delve into who these people were and build the historical background for the narrative. It created a very rich and relatable story that kept me wanting to read and continue even when I had to put the book down for other responsibilities.
