BIBLIOPHILE MUSINGS:
Love this cover. I’ve switched genres yet again, literary fiction, historical fiction now dystopian fantasy. Being a connoisseur of several genres I enjoy switching things up. I’m really got into this one. The premise of a world where your worth is dependent on not only being born a twin but on both twins surviving intrigues me.
The concept of needing another person to ‘survive’ in this society was different but the author made it very realistic. Though the monarch is the government, this world’s religious establishments also hold extensive power. The temple takes over many responsibilities such as caring for the diminished, twins who have lost their sibling or disposing of those who have become ‘dangerous’. The ‘dangerous’ diminished lose their minds to grief and turn violent. Some diminished simply give in to grief and depression and follow their sibling in death. It is rare for a diminished to survive the death of their twin and not have some repercussion.
The way this author has created characters and a world around realistic concepts and ideas but thrown in fictional twists and premises without breaking believability kept me riveted the entire time. I hope she has more books planned with these characters in this world.
